My 2015 Year-End Review Recap

At the end of each year, I do a year-end review. I go through all of my journals and calendars and reflect on everything that happened that year. I then type a report of everything I reflect on. You’ll see a lot of the categories I reflect on below. The main goal of the review if to celebrate what God did, to evaluate what areas I grew in, what areas I need to grow in, what I am going to do about the areas I need to grow in, and then to dream about the upcoming year. Tough Questions from 2015:

  • Marriage: Ask your spouse, where are you on a scale of 1-10 in marriage and what do I need to do to get to a 10?
  • What areas of my life have I forgotten about the ability to choose?
  • What would my schedule look like if God were in charge of it?
  • What in Pittsburgh is God weeping about?
  • What are the areas you would be most embarrassed for friend and family to have knowledge of your thoughts and actions?
  • What am I going to do today to move the needle forward?
  • What does dreaming as big as Google, Facebook, etc. look like for me? They all started with thoughts and dreams!
  • Where do I need to be 3 years from now to be personally and professionally in order to be satisfied with my progress?
  • What would I do if I had a million dollars?
  • What is my action plan for raising great kids and being an awesome husband to my wife?
  • Is my fear of criticism greater than my desire for success?
  • What unauthorized expenditures and unauthorized events do I do? –Keith Moore
  • What would I go for if I knew I could not fail?
  • How can I add ten to fifteen times more value to people?
  • How do people respond when I ask for commitment or change?
  • Who is the essence of what you think young leaders need to know?
  • When are you going to start taking your leadership gift seriously?
  • What are the barriers to tell each other the truth?
  • Is God speaking anything to you that you’re ignoring?
  • Am I thinking about what’s going to happen 10 years down the road?
  • How long can you maintain focus, even if the crowd is not responding?
  • What game are you watching that you’d rather be playing?
  • What’s the price if I don’t pursue the vision in my heart?
  • Can I serve without bragging about it?
  • Can I do something without anyone knowing about it?
  • Why am I posting what I’m posting?
  • Do I really love the people I’m serving or do I love that I’m serving?
  • Am I trying to give glory to God or myself?

Lessons Learned

I will be recording a podcast this month of my top lessons learned in 2015. Stay tuned! Here are a few things I learned:

  • You’ll hang with people who confirm what you believe about yourself
  • The most embarrassing moments are when I get on stage, and forget why I’m here
  • Man’s greatest enemy is most present when we are most certain he is not!
  • Define Yes for People
  • People love when the bar is high
  • Stop waiting for permission!
  • If you took your life plan to the county, what would they say?
  • You’ll never outperform your self-image
  • People talk, so your life has to be better than the rumors
  • Jesus had 132 public appearances – 92% of them were in the market place – He went where the people were!
  • Riches don’t respond to wishes, they respond to plans, backed by desires, through constant persistence.
  • The fastest way to become a billionaire is to help a billion people
  • Nothing tastes as good as fit feels
  • A phone call is worth 1,000 e-mails
  • 85% of people become leaders become leaders because of the influence of other leaders
  • People don’t buy products, they buy better versions of themselves!
  • Character is more caught than taught
  • If you know you can accomplish a goal, it’s not a BHAG!
  • The pathway to your greatest potential is to take steps right through your greatest fears!
  • You’ll learn more from critics than those who adore you
  • A company never outgrows the strength of it’s systems
  • If you only place a small value upon yourself, rest assured the world will not raise the price!
  • Once you taste significance, success will never satisfy you!
  • A city famous for a God is a city where vulnerable people are no longer vulnerable, no more injustice, isolation, poverty, drugs, etc.
  • Your humility protects you from deception
  • Don’t want to be anything other than what God called you to be!
  • Anything God asks you to do is a big deal! Don’t ever pray about obeying God!
  • Stop dismissing what God put in your heart and start taking it seriously. You never know what God will do!
  • Our biggest fear is that we can’t do what we’re called to do
  • If you could live the people’s lives you envy, you’d be miserable, because it’s not your life!
  • There are 6.1 billion people on the planet who want nothing to do with your Mission, go find the ones that do!
  • When you choose to do something for God, it can feel like nothing. The secret to greatness is to act o God’s word without any feeling.

2015 Goals Assessment

Goals Set in January 2015:

  • Give away at least 12% of our income
    • Complete
  • Buy a House or a townhouse
    • Complete in April
  • Go away for my 30th birthday 
    • Laura threw a surprise party
  • Go on Vacation with Laura
    • Complete in September 2015
  • Raise $X in the Major Donor File for Light of Life
    • Complete!
  • Run the Pittsburgh Marathon or Fall Marathon in 3:30 (8 minute mile)
    • Ran it in 3:34, shaved 9 minutes off my time from last year
  • Make at Least $X 
    • Complete
  • Have a baby or at least be pregnant!
    • August!
  • Create a product that I can sell or at least use for e-mail sign-ups
    • Yes, completed on December 31st
  • Get between 6-7% bodyfat and weigh under 180 lbs.
    • Did not accomplish – Wasn’t as consistent as I needed to be
  • Turn Learning to Lead into an actual business or non-profit
    • Complete in July of 2015

  • I will develop my e-book freemium by August, 31st, 2015
    • DECEMBER 31st
  • I will save 3-6 months savings in our Emergency account
    • On our way
  • I will start a leadership program for young leaders by January 1st, 2016
    • Did not accomplish
  • I will start investing 15% of our income into retirement by January 1st, 2016
    • Did not accomplish
  • I will start building relationships with and guest blogging for other like-minded entrepreneurs online. At least 1-2 guest posts per month.
    • Did not accomplish
  • I will create/host the following by December 31st, 2015: Create 36 Learning to Lead podcasts, host 12 breakfasts, 24 small groups, and post 3 blog posts each week, and 12 serving opportunities
    • Created 30 podcasts, 11 breakfasts, 24 small groups, 4 serving opportunties
  • I will create one memorable experience each month with my family
    • Didn’t get every month in, but did pretty good
  • I will build my e-mail list up to over 500 people
    • Got it up to 327
  • I will host and teach one seminar by December 31st, 2015
    • Did not accomplish due to fear and not putting it on the calendar!
  • I will raise 50% of my fundraising goal in the first quarter of our fiscal year at Light of Life (October – December)
