What to do if You Cannot Dream Big

I recently wrote about letting yourself dream big by playing the “what if” game. At the end of the post, I said, “These are some of the big dreams in my heart. I hope that a few years down the road that these dreams seem small in comparison to the dreams I have then.” As I thought about that, I started to think about what my dreams were 10-15 years ago. I recognized very quickly that the dreams I had when I was 17 years old are completely different than the dreams I have now.

When I was 17, I didn’t have the ability to dream big. If you were to read my “what-if” list at that time in my life, it would look something like this:

  • What if one day, I could have a car that has electronic windows?
  • What if one day, I could actually get married and have a family?
  • What if I could get a job that would allow me to pay my bills?
  • What if I could actually finish college?

I did not have the ability to dream big. I had no goals. I had no ambition to do anything. I never though my life would amount to anything. All I cared about was having fun and partying.

After reflecting on this, I asked myself the question: What has enabled me to go from someone who had no dreams or goals to someone who has dreams of changing the world? I came up with two things:

you'll never know what you're capable of until you start pursuing Him.

1.) I started Pursuing God – When I started pursuing God, I learned a few things that changed my life forever. I learned that:

  • God has a plan for my life.
  • God’s plan for my life is for me to make a significant impact in the world for Him.
  • God has given me the gifts and talents I need to do what He’s called me to do.
  • If I’ll surrender my life to God, He’ll do things in and through me that I couldn’t do on my own in 1,000 lifetimes

In over 13 years of consistently following God, I’ve learned that you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you start pursuing Him. As I’ve pursued God, He’s put vision and dreams in my heart, He’s surrounded me with people to help me grow into the person I need to become to go after those dreams, and He’s allowed me to live a life with purpose (something I never thought I’d get the chance to do.) He’ll do the same for you!

2.) I Got Around People who Dream Big – TD Jakes once said, “People are inspired by others to do more & be more. Align yourself with people with big vision and you’ll find your best self.” In my life, I had to get around people who dreamed of bigger things than paying their bills and having electronic windows in their car. I found these people in my church.

I met leaders who dreamed of reaching an entire generation for God. I met leaders who dreamed of raising world changing families. It’s often said that in life, more is caught than taught. As I surrounded myself with people who dreamed big, I began to dream big.

If you’re reading this and you feel like you will never be able to dream big or live a life of purpose, I challenge you to start pursuing God and start surrounding yourself with people who dream big. I believe if you’ll simply do those two things, in just a few months and years, you’ll be dreaming bigger than you’ve ever dreamt, and you’ll being living a life you never dreamed you could live.

What have you done in your life that has enabled you to dream big?
