Comparison Kills

20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” 22Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

John 21:20-22

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but it’s very easy to compare myself with everybody else in the world. Whether it comes to how I look, how I perform, or the call God has on my life, I always find myself in the comparison trap.

I think a lot of times we’re just like Peter, we look at what God is doing in and through other people and say God what about so and so – they have this and they have that, when is it going to be my turn? We usually end thoughts like that with, “It’s just not fair”. While that kind of thinking may add value to us having a pity party, it will never bring us into the place God called us to.

I love Jesus’ response and I think it’s something we all need to have settled in our hearts. “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? YOU MUST FOLLOW ME” Basically he is saying, listen, it’s none of your business what I’m doing in other peoples lives. It’s up to you to follow me with all of your heart and find out what I have for you. Stop looking all around to see who is farther along than you, who is better looking, who has more stuff, and start focusing on me.

It’s when we come to a place where were able to focus on what God’s called us to do that we’ll be in a position for Him to bless us. Comparison won’t do anything except discourage and depress you. So stop it! Focus on what God has called you to do and you’ll find you’re loving your life more and more. You’ll be in a position to be absolutely thrilled about what God is doing in other peoples lives and you’ll have no room or time for bitterness or envy to creep into your life through comparison.

Stop comparing and start focusing on what He has for YOU!
