How to Develop the Right Habits this Year

A while back, I wrote a post on the power of habits! Habits will make or break you. They will lead you to success or failure. Dostoevsky said it, The second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half.Lucas Remmerswaal said, “First you make your habits, then your habits make you!

While many of you probably set New Year resolutions, few of them will stick long-term unless you make habits of them. I’d like to help you develop the habits that will lead you to success in whatever goals you are pursuing.

Thanks to Tim Ferris, I recently stumbled upon an app called Lift that is intended to help you develop habits. It’s help me a lot in the 2 months that I have been using it.

Whether or not you use the app isn’t important to me, although I highly recommend it, what’s important is that you develop a system for developing the right habits to help you achieve your goals.

Whatever goals you set this year, you need to break them down into daily action steps that will help you accomplish them. John Maxwell always says that, “The secret to your success will always be found in your daily agenda.” If you can develop the right daily habits, your goals will take care of themselves.

Steps for Developing the Right Habits:

1.)Determine what Habits You need to Develop to Achieve Your Goals

2.) Download the Lift App or develop a tracking system

3.) Enter or write down all of the Habits You’d like to Develop

4.) Add those Habits to your Daily to-do list

5.) Track those habits daily on your Lift app or in a notebook

Here is a list of the Daily Habits I am developing using Lift:

  • Spend 30-60 Minutes Reading
  • A minimum of 5 thank you cards
  • A minimum of 10 Calls
  • Eat Clean
  • Write 1 blog post
  • Call a Family Member
  • Comment on 3 blogs
  • Drink 8 cups of Water
  • Spent Money Wisely
  • Exercise
  • Floss
  • Pray for 10 minutes
  • Review my Goals
  • Set Priorities for the Day
  • Sleep 8 Hours
  • Spend time with Family
  • Write for 30 Minutes

My list changes all the time as I determine what I need to be doing to achieve success. The important thing is to always be determining what habits you need to be developing to achieve your current goals and what habits you’re currently doing that aren’t helping you get to where you want to be.  If your current habits aren’t helping you, recognize them and stop doing them!
