Are You Dreaming too Small?

Last week, I attended the Global Leadership Summit. My favorite session was Craig Groeschel’s talk. During his talk, he shared a story about a mentor he had in his life when he was just starting out in ministry. His mentor was in his seventies. Craig was talking to him about the possibility of going to more services to meet the needs of his growing congregation. At the time, he never heard of a church doing as many services as they were going to do.

His mentor looked at him and said, “That’s the problem with young leaders, you all dream too small.” His mentor went on to challenge him to think about what it would be like to have twice as many services and have multiple locations for church. That conversation changed everything for Craig and his church. His church now has a ton of services every week at locations all over the US.

Not dreaming big enough! That is an area that I have been thinking a lot about lately. I recently heard someone quote Eric Schmidt, the founder of Google, saying, “99.9% of people are the planet are not working on something that has the ability to change the world.”

I spend a lot of time with leaders in their 50’s and 60’s. Many of them are living out the dreams they dreamed when they were in their twenties and thirties. I am realizing is that in twenty years, I will be in my 50’s. I don’t want to look back at this season of my life and think that I could have dreamed bigger or pursued more. I want to go all in now!

[shareable cite=”-H Jackson Brown Jr. ” text=”Tweet this!”]“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”[/shareable]

My prayer lately has been, “God, give me dreams that will change the world for you. Give me dreams that can only be accomplished through you. I don’t want to just dream about things and do things that I am capable of doing. Help me to pursue the dreams you have for me.”

A few quotes that have been inspiring me in this area are:

Mark Batterson said, “GOOD IDEAS are good, but it’s GOD IDEAS that change the course of history.”

Ephesians 3:20 says, “20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”

Mae West said, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”

I believe our greatest dreams will be the ones God births in our hearts. I believe our greatest life will be the one God has planned for us.  I believe our lives will only be truly fulfilling when we’re pursuing the dreams God puts in our hearts.

I want to encourage you to spend some time dreaming with God. Don’t settle for small, mediocre dreams that you can come up with on your own.

Let’s all take the time to hear from God and dream the dreams He has for us. For us to be dreaming anything else, would be dreaming too small.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What are you dreaming about?
  • Are you dreaming too small?
  • What is the biggest dream you are dreaming right now?
  • If you lived out your biggest dream, what would your life look like in twenty years?
  • Twenty years from now, what do you want to have accomplished?
  • What dreams do you believe God has put in your heart?
  • Are you pursuing them?
