“I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” Abraham Lincoln
I was listening to an interview with Jack Welch recently. He said, “The people we rewarded the most at GE were the people who were continually finding ways to do things better than we had done them in the past.”
I have found that same principle to be true in life. The people who get rewarded are the people who continually get better everyday.
How can you get better everyday?
1.) Reflect and Evaluate what you have done in the past – What did you do that was good? What wasn’t good? What needs to change? What could be better next time?
2.) Educate Yourself – Read and listen to as many resources as you can in the area you want to get better in. Ask people for feedback and advice. Find out who is successful in this area and call them and ask them to teach you how they do it. Learn as much as you can!
3.) Make the changes necessary to make it better – Based on your reflections of the past and what you learned in the education step, make the necessary changes to get better.
4.) Repeat – Once you’ve implemented what you’ve learned, it’s time to start over! Reflect and evaluate, reeducate yourself, and make the changes necessary to get better.
If you want to get better, you should be doing these things every day. John Maxwell always says, “Growth happens daily, not in a day.” You don’t need to grow a ton every day. All you need to do is get a little bit better today than you were yesterday.
Reflection Questions:
- In every area of your life are you better today than you were last year? Physically? Mentally? Emotionally? Financially? Spiritually? In your career?
- What can you do today to get better in each area of your life?
