When God Tells You to Go [Podcast]

I recently had the privilege of speaking at iChurch for my friends Ben and Alicia Rath. If you live in Pittsburgh and are looking for a church, I couldn’t encourage you enough to visit their church! It’s an incredible place.

In this message, I talk to you about the seasons of your life when God tells you to go. They can often be uncomfortable seasons. However, if we will learn how to successful navigate our seasons of “go”, our lives will become a story worth telling. You can listen to the message below or by clicking this link. The notes for this message are below. I hope this message helps you on your journey! Enjoy.

When God says to Go

Notes:

Series: THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE TODAY DETERMINE THE STORIES YOU TELL TOMORROW. One day—you’re going to tell a story about this season in life.

If you’re following God, you can hear from and be led by God!

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children[a] of God. – Romans 8:14

It’s God’s will that you know God’s will!  God wants you to get where God wants you to go more than you want to get where God wants you to go.

Sometimes when God calls us to go, it’s subtle: Serving somewhere, getting involved, having a date night, pouring out what God’s put into you, etc.

Sometimes when God calls us to go, it’s a major life change: starting a business or a church, having kids, moving, changing jobs, you got let go

My purpose for today is to get you to realize that in life, SOMETIMES THE BEST DECISION YOU CAN MAKE IS TO GO WHEN IT WOULD BE EASIER TO STAY.

When seasons of go come, we have a choice:

1.) We can resist it and do everything we can to stay where we were

2.) We can cooperate with God and see what He does

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”  – Genesis 12:2-3

1. You Have to Know that God said to Go!

Until you know you’re supposed to go, STAY

When you know you’re supposed to go, GO

2. When God tells you to go, It will Require You to Trust Him when what He Tells You Doesn’t Make Sense

Abraham did not know where he was going!

3. When God tells you to go, Don’t Look back

Abraham had to leave his native country, his relatives, his father’s family . . .

“But forget all that—it is nothing compared to what I am going to do For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. Isaiah 43:19,20

62 But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.” -Luke 9:62

God wants to do a NEW thing. He wants to use you to bless a lot of people, but in order for you to do that, you’re going to have to let go of the old, and embrace the new!

4. When God tells you to Go, You Discover Dreams and Gifts You Never Knew You Had

5. When God tells you to Go, His Provision Goes with His Direction

Genesis 24:34-35 – The Lord has greatly blessed my master. He has become a wealthy man. The Lord has given him flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, a fortune in silver and gold, and many male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

6. When God tells you to Go, You will reach people you would have never reached

Jesus said the harvest is great, but the workers are few. If all the workers just stay where they are at, they will never go. Jesus said for us to GO into all the world and make disciples!

There are people on the other side of your obedience! The best thing you did for anyone was obey God! Even when it doesn’t make sense! The people that said you were stupid will thank you in 20 years!

7. When God tells you to Go, Your Life Becomes a Story worth Telling

God takes ordinary people, doing ordinary things, to do extraordinary things for His Kingdom.

When you go, God will take your ordinary life and make it extraordinary!

”When you follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, you never know who you’ll meet, where you’ll go, or what you’ll do. But one thing is certain: it’ll be anything but boring!”  -Mark Batterson

When You don’t Go, You will Never Know the story You are Missing out On!

  • What if the disciples stayed on the boat when Jesus said to follow Him?
  • What if Abraham never left?
  • What if Moses stayed in the wilderness forever?

The stories that will you will tell the most are the stories where God told you to go and it didn’t make sense, but God showed up!

Challenge: Is God telling you to go? It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It could be a NEXT STEP!

Your go could be:

  • Starting to have a date night with your spouse or a family night with your kids
  • Serving in this church! – Maybe you’ve been on the sidelines . . . God can’t steer a parked car! The people that were used greatly by God were all doing SOMETHING before they did something significant for God. David was a shepherd, Jesus was a carpenter, Paul was a student!
  • Going back to School
  • Looking for a new job
  • Joining a small group
  • Starting a business or a church

I don’t know what your go is or what is on the other side of Go for you, but I can tell you it’s worth it.

Genesis 24:1 – Abraham was now a very old man, and God had blessed him in every way.

Genesis 25:7 – Abraham lived for 175 years and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life. He breathed his last breath and joined his ancestors in death.

Abraham lived a story worth telling because when God told him to go, he went. . .

The best way for you to live a story that is worth telling is by allowing God to write it. When God say go, go, when He says stay, stay. When he says wait, wait.

What will you do when God says go?
