Last year, a friend showed me this inspirational video of Arnold Schwarzenegger! It fired me up! While I certainly don’t endorse everything Arnold has done with his life, I do admire what he has accomplished with his life. In this video, he shares some of his secrets to success. Take three minutes and watch it, then read the rest of the post.
My favorite line in this clip is, “Don’t be afraid to fail. How many times have you heard that you can’t do this and you can’t do that, it’s never been done before. Pay no attention to the people that say it can’t be done. If I would have listened to the naysayers, I’d still be in the Austrian Alps yodeling!”
What if Arnold listened to the people who told him what he wanted to do was impossible? He would have never came to America, made any films, etc. The world would have missed out on Terminator, Kindergarten Cop, and all the other great movies we’ve come to enjoy over the years!
With that in mind, I have a few questions for you:
- What have you missed out on because you’ve listened to naysayers in your life?
- What will you miss out on in the future if you listen to the naysayers?
- What will the world miss out on if you listen to the naysayers?
The truth is, we all have naysayers in our lives. Most of them are well-meaning and do not want to see us fail or get hurt. Unfortunately, there are also some naysayers who do want to see us fail. The question is not, “Will we have naysayers in our lives?” The question is, “Will we let the naysayers in our lives dictate our future?”
Bill Hybels once said, “God has sent out extremely cool visions to people all over the planet only to have those visions snuffed out by fear!” All too often, the fear that snuffs out our vision is fear of the naysayers. It’s time to put those fears to rest. It’s time to stop giving the naysayers in your life a voice.
Henry Cloud said, “When someone tells you what you can’t be, they’re predicting a future that they do not control!” The only people in control of your future are you and God. It does not matter what naysayers say about you. It doesn’t matter who you were or what you’ve done in the past. All that matters is you doing what you believe God put in your heart to do.
Don’t let the world miss out on what’s in your heart because a few naysayers said it could not be done.
Make a list of the naysayers in your life. Maybe it’s a teacher, an old mentor, a parent, a family member, etc. Evaluate their influence in your life.
