The Prayer I Love and Hate to Pray!

“God is the architect of your growth.” -Dan Dupee

Years ago, I heard Keith Moore say that he consistently prays to God and asks, “God, develop me as quickly and as solidly as possible.” I love that prayer and I have been asking God to do the same thing in my life for years.

It’s a great prayer because I really do want God to help me reach my maximum potential as quickly as possible, yet I want to build deep enough foundation that overtime I am able to sustain my growth.

It is a tough prayer to pray because God answers it!

Recently, God has brought to my attention a few big issues that I need to work on. The issues cover a few different areas: how I deal with frustration, being critical without being helpful, and my motives in my pursuit for position & power.

I’ve been aware of these issues for a while, but have come to a point where I need to deal with them head on! I have to admit, that coming to a point where I need to deal with these issues was not comfortable or fun, however, having had to deal with character issues in my life before, I know that once I deal with these issues, I’ll be more of the man God wants me to be.

James 1:2-4 says, “Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

In the past, when God would deal with me about issues, I would get upset and have pity parties. Now that I’ve had a few years under my belt of working through issues God brings to my attention, I actually get kind of excited that I get to work on an issue. Why? Because I know I’m going to be more of the person God wants me to be after I deal with it.

Every character issue that God has ever had me work on has always made me a better person, son, husband, worker, friend, servant, etc.

The greatest thing about walking with God is that He knows the character issues that He wants us to work on 20 years from now! Issues that we don’t even know are issues yet! I’m so glad He doesn’t make us work on all of our issues at once! We’d be overwhelmed.

I have found that God knows exactly what issues we need to be working on in this season of life that we’re in.

Today, I simply want to challenge you to embrace the issues in your life that God is bringing to your attention! He’ll give you the strength, grace, wisdom, and resources necessary to work through them. Once you work through a few issues, you will see how much you have grown and you will start getting exciting when God brings up another issue because you know that it is an opportunity to grow into something more than you were before!

Questions:

  • How do you normally react when you learn of an issue you need to work on?
  • Have you worked through any issues in your past? What was that experience like?
  • What issues is God bringing to your attention in your life right now?
  • What are you doing to work through them?

Challenge: Ask God to help you develop as quickly and as solidly as possible today! It’s one of the greatest prayers you can pray. While you may hate it when God actually answers it, in the end you’ll love that He did.
