Pride, Idolatry, and Fear

Message Notes:

Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. II Corinthians 13:5

Whatever God has ultimately called you to do is going to take an enormous amount of refining!

“The more people you can help, the more people you can hurt.” – Joyce Meyer

Other people are on the other side of your personal growth or lack thereof!

Area #1: Pride – Elevating Yourself

Two Definitions of Pride

How do you know if you’re deep into pride? People and God probably stopped speaking to you a long time ago.

What do you do when the truth comes to you? Look for patterns . . .

This type of pride drives everyone out of your life . . . Proverbs 1:29-31

29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord . . . Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof…Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

Second Type of Pride: Pride as a result of the Blessing and Favor of God

11 Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt… Deut 8:11-14

John 3:27 John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven.

Idolatry – Elevating a person or thing above God

Mark 4: 18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, 19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced.

Psalm 106:36 – They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall.

What is taking the place that only God should have in your life?

Matthew 10: 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

Test to see if something is an idol: Could you live without it?

If God is truly first in our lives, and He never leaves us and never forsakes us, that should be all we need to go through life.

Fear – Elevating a False Reality over God and His Word!

Fear paralyzes us and will hold us back from doing what God’s called you to do!

Psalm 34:3 – I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Pride, Idols, and Fear – Elevating yourself, a thing (idol) or person, or a false reality above God and His Word!

The Answer: Surrender to God, Put Him First, Find out What the Word Says

24 Then Jesus said unto His disciples, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it. Matthew 16:24-25

If you try to exalt yourself, God will find a way to humble you. If you try to humble yourself, God will find a way to exalt Himself in you. And He’s awfully good at both. -Mark Batterson
