Summit Takeaway 2: There is Something New Under the Sun

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9

Erwin McManus started his session at the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit, telling us how much this verse bothered him all throughout his walk with God.

He talked about how Christians have allowed this verse to hold them back from creating a better future with God. It’s held them back from dreaming big, being creative, and just going for it. It has held us back from being the most creative and influential people on the planet.

His conclusion: Solomon was wrong… There is something new under the sun!

Think of all the things that happened in the Bible that were new: God splitting the water of the red sea, God speaking to Moses in a burning bush, a virgin birth, God walking among us, touching blind making them see, God being crucified,  resurrection of the dead, Jesus dying and raising from the dead then moving the tomb, so new that It never had to be done twice!

How about in the Word when it says:

Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. -Isaiah 43:19

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. – II Corinthians 5:17

Reality: God is a God of the new.If you live a life outside of God, then there is nothing new under the sun. You’re stuck in a repetitive day, a repetitive life. But if you live for God, He unleashes you to live your most heroic life. A life where there is always something new under the sun.

While our message never changes, our tactics have to.

Challenge: There is a future to be created! Evil people don’t wait to create the future they have in mind while Christians sit around waiting for God to do something. God wants to use us to do something new. He wants us to create the future, but before we can we need to realize that God is fully capable of doing something new. Christians should be the most creative and influential people on the planet, but the only way that will happen is if we believe God is a God of the new and that He’ll give us ideas and do things we’ve never thought of before.

Let’s believe God to do something new in and through our generation. Let’s believe that when God does, we’ll make the difference we’re supposed to be making in the world.

God is still doing the new!
